Our Aims

The Diggers Writers Group is a WEA-affiliated writers workshop which meets every Tuesday in the famous Diggers Pub in Edinburgh. Established to provide detailed criticism of long prose, the group also welcomes poets, short-story writers and wordsmiths using other forms of writing.

 The group aims to provide:

bullet

            A platform for works-in-progress

bullet

            Constructive criticism for these works

bullet

            Encouragement and suggestions for improvement

bullet

Publication outlets with its magazines The Yonkly and Elephant's Eye

bullet            A good time all the time

Membership Information

Membership is restricted due to the time needed to allow for detailed criticisms. Under our system a meeting of four readers produces twelve (4x3) separate criticisms. In our experience that takes about an hour. Five readers means twenty crits; six means thirty crits; seven means forty-two - well over three hours! Of course, not all of our members attend every night, and not all those that do bring something to read. So we can be reasonably flexible. But there are limits, and any more than a dozen or so semi-regular members is about the most we can deal with. So if you want to join you may have to wait until there is a vacancy.

Members are asked to donate £3 a year to cover administration costs.
